Its Beginning

GOD WORKS

Taste and See owners, Pael and Yvic, lived an abundant life during the first few years of their marriage. They both enjoyed a life of achievements, pleasures, and successes. However, these were all temporary. As the years went by, their businesses closed one by one. As a result, their problems started piling up. They did not know where to get the money they need to meet their everyday needs, pay their bills and loans, and put their children to school. They felt that everything was falling apart. Pael and Yvic prayed for a solution to their problems. Instead of giving them what they thought they needed, God blessed them with their only son, 11 years after having their youngest daughter.

With the addition of a family member, their family needs increased. Consequently, they decided to try different ways to earn money. They opened a small talipapa in front of their house. They became resellers of candies. Yvic, then, attended various seminars for entrepreneurs. They only had a few hours of sleep each day to make ends meet.

God-Centered

Something sparked in Pael’s head, “Bakit hindi tayo gumawa ng sarili nating pastillas?”

Little did they know that God was working in their lives during those dark and difficult times.

Soon, Pael and Yvic realized that their family life needed transformation. Pael sincerely prayed to God to make him the provider and head of the family as He intended him to be. God hears our prayers, and He heard Pael’s.

In 2009, Yvic came home from a meeting with four pieces of pastillas, a milk candy for which Bulacan is well known. Something sparked in Pael’s head, “Bakit hindi tayo gumawa ng sarili nating pastillas?” (“Why don't we make our own pastillas?”).

He immediately got up and rode his bike to buy the ingredients for their first attempt of making pastillas. Although they did not particularly like how their very first batch of homemade pastillas tasted, Pael and Yvic individually wrapped their pastillas in green cellophane. A few days later, when their nieces and nephew visited them, Pael and Yvic gave them the sweets as treats to take home. Yvic received a message from her sister-in-law saying that her children loved the pastillas and asked where they bought these. Encouraged by the wonderful feedback, the couple dove into improving their pastillas recipe.

The beginning of Taste and See demonstrates that when everything seems to be falling apart, God, in His wonderful ways, makes everything fall into its rightful place.

Its Growth

GOD BLESSES

From their first attempt, they soon achieved a recipe that they, their family, and their friends loved.

They began by making milky candy cubes coated with white sugar and wrapped in cellophane of different colors (red, orange, yellow, green, and blue). This is the birth of Taste and See’s Milky Pastillas. The family did not own an electric mixer then, so Pael would mix the milky paste with a spatula by hand while standing for almost an hour. Their children would wrap the candies when they came home from school. Pael and Yvic enjoyed making pastillas with their children as they were able to spend meaningful and quality time together as one family.

To market the candies, the couple went to different stores to offer their candies. Yvic even walked along Divisoria with a stroller full of Milky Pastillas, trying to convince store owners to carry their product. Indeed, marketing their product was a lot of hard work.

God-Centered

At times, Pael had to decide whether to use the money to buy ingredients for their business or give it to his children for their baon.

Their pastillas helped Pael provide for his family, but they earned just enough to cover their basic needs. At times, Pael had to decide whether to use the money to buy ingredients for their business or give it to his children for their baon. However, his family has always been his priority next to God. With their modest income, the couple taught their children to live below their means and to thank the Lord every day for all His blessings. Every centavo for them was considered grace from the Lord. Although budgeting their earnings was difficult, Pael never missed one thing, and that is, to tithe (to give back one-tenth of his earnings to God), even if it meant having less than what was in his hands. Day by day, they prayed for and trusted God’s provision. The Lord was faithful and honored Pael’s obedience; He miraculously provided both for their family’s business and daily needs.

Thinking of a suitable name for their microbusiness, Pael came across a calendar with Bible verses. One of these verses is Psalm 34:8, which says, “Taste and see that the Lord is good; How blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!” The family has experienced the enduring truth of the verse firsthand, and thus, they chose the name Taste and See. To this day, “Psalm 34:8” is printed on all Taste and See’s packaging.

In 2011, after two years of selling their Milky Pastillas, Pael discovered a new recipe. For the couple, the recipe is really God given. They got an idea that their Milky Pastillas would taste unexplainably delicious when toasted. They tried heating the frozen milk pastillas in the oven. This process achieved a perfect combination of the toasted caramel flavor of the sugar coating and the sweet milky flavor of the pastillas. After praying for and figuring out their newly discovered recipe, the best-selling and most famous product of Taste and See was born—The Original Toasted Pastillas. Because of God’s loving-kindness, the company’s masterpiece, The Original Toasted Pastillas, became a hit and introduced the label “Taste and See” to the market.
